The Culmination of Shabari’s Story
As the nine diyas burned in perfect harmony, Dadi’s voice grew soft with reverence. “And do you know what happened after Lord Ram finished teaching Shabari these nine forms?”
Tarkik, who had almost forgotten they were discussing a story from the Ramayana, leaned forward. “What happened to her?”
“Shabari’s eyes filled with tears of fulfillment. She had waited her entire life for this moment—not just to see Lord Ram, but to receive the wisdom that would complete her understanding. She bowed to him and said, ‘Lord, I have no more desires. My guru’s promise is fulfilled, your teaching is complete, and my devotion has found its purpose.'”
Dadi’s own eyes grew moist. “Then, before Lord Ram’s compassionate gaze, Shabari entered into deep meditation. Her physical form began to glow with an inner light, and slowly, gently, like morning mist dissolving in sunlight, she merged with the infinite. She achieved moksha—liberation—right there in her humble ashram.”
“Just from understanding these teachings?” Tarkik asked, his voice hushed.
“No, beta. From living them. Ram’s words were merely the final key to a door she had been approaching her whole life. Every berry she collected, every day she waited, every act of faith despite logic—these were all steps on the path. The teaching simply revealed that she had already arrived.”
Dadi gestured to the nine flames. “This is why we light nine diyas on Shabari Jayanti. Each flame represents not just a teaching, but a lived truth. Shabari shows us that bhakti isn’t about grand gestures or complex philosophies. It’s about sincere devotion lived moment by moment, day by day, until the boundary between the devotee and the divine dissolves.”
