Why do we have a heartbeat?
Illustrated by Once Upon A Storytime

You’ve probably felt your heart beating in your chest – maybe after you’ve been running, or when you’re feeling nervous or excited. This beat or pulse is the sound and feeling of your heart pumping blood around your body. Let’s find out more about why we have a heartbeat:

  1. The Heart – Your Body’s Pump: The heart is a very important organ in your body. It’s about the size of your fist and sits in your chest. It has a very important job: to pump blood around your body. And when it does this, it beats.
  2. Blood Circulation: So, why does your body need to move blood around? Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to every part of your body, from your brain all the way down to your toes, to help your cells work properly. At the same time, the blood picks up waste products, like carbon dioxide, which your body needs to eliminate.
  3. Four Chambers of the Heart: Your heart has four different sections or chambers. Two are called atria (or one atrium if we’re talking about just one), and two are called ventricles. The heart’s rhythm – the “lub-dub, lub-dub” that you hear – comes from these chambers contracting (squeezing) and relaxing in a particular order. The “lub” is the sound of the atria pushing blood into the ventricles, and the “dub” is the sound of the ventricles pushing blood out to the body.
  4. Your Heartbeat and Feelings: Have you ever noticed that your heartbeat changes with how you’re feeling or what you’re doing? When you run around and play, your heart beats faster to get more oxygen to your muscles. When you’re resting, your heart slows down. Even when you feel scared or excited, your heart rate can increase because your body is preparing for action!
  5. Listening to Your Heartbeat: Doctors sometimes listen to your heartbeat using a tool called a stethoscope. They can tell a lot about your health from the rhythm and speed of your heartbeat. You can also feel your heartbeat by placing your hand on your chest or wrist. Next time you feel your pulse, remember: it’s the sound of your heart working hard to keep you healthy!

So, having a heartbeat is all about keeping your body working properly. It’s like a pump, moving blood around to carry important things where they need to go. Isn’t it incredible to think about how your body works? As we continue our journey through the human body, we’ll discover even more about the amazing things our bodies do daily!
