Challenge I: Naga’s Conundrum

As he journeyed through the mystical realm, he soon came across a treacherous river, its turbulent waters churning and frothing. On the river’s bank stood a wise Naga, a serpent guardian known for his cunning riddles.

The Naga raised his head as Arjun approached, his eyes gleaming with curiosity. “Ah, a young seeker on a noble quest,” the Naga hissed. “If you wish to cross this river and continue your journey, you must first answer my riddle.”

Arjun bowed respectfully to the Naga. “I am ready, wise guardian. Please present your riddle.”

The Naga’s voice took on a rhythmic cadence as he spoke, “I am the beginning of sorrow and the end of sickness. You cannot express happiness without me, yet I am in the midst of crosses. I am always in risk, yet never in danger. You will find me in the sun, but I am never out of darkness. What am I?”

Arjun closed his eyes, drawing upon the knowledge from the stories he had grown up with. He thought of the countless tales he had heard, the wisdom they contained and the lessons they taught. Suddenly, a flash of insight struck him.

Opening his eyes, Arjun smiled at the Naga. “The letter ‘S’,” he answered confidently.

The Naga’s eyes widened in surprise, and then he nodded approvingly. “Well done, young seeker. Your wit and wisdom have served you well. You may cross the river and continue on your path.”

With a grateful bow, Arjun waded through the now-calm waters of the river, his heart filled with the thrill of overcoming his first challenge. As he reached the other side, he looked back at the Naga, who watched him with a knowing smile.

Invigorated by his success, Arjun pressed on, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Little did he know that his journey had only just begun and that the enchanted forest that loomed before him held even greater tests of his knowledge and faith.

Talk about this story

Three questions to spark a conversation with your child after reading.

Arjun felt doubtful because he was "just a young boy." Have you ever felt too small to make a difference? What "inner strength" do you have that could help you?

Lord Krishna tells Arjun that true strength is not about violence. Can you think of a time when using your brain or being kind solved a problem better than being angry?

If you were given a celestial quest like Arjun, which quality from the story—wisdom, courage, or devotion—would you want to take with you as your "superpower"?
