Dare to Wish: Ravi and the Enchanted Mango Tree

Labdhapraṇāśam (Loss of Gains)

Thoughtful consideration leads to wise choices; hasty decisions can turn dreams into nightmares, but wisdom allows growth and understanding.

Wisdom from a Magic Mango Tree

In the vibrant and bustling village of Gokul, a place filled with laughter and harmony, lived a young and curious boy named Ravi. His eyes sparkled with dreams, shaped by tales of adventure told by the village elders, and his heart was a wild garden of imagination. Ravi’s insatiable curiosity was a blessing inherited from his explorer grandfather, yet sometimes it led him into trouble, particularly when his enthusiasm outpaced his wisdom.

One blistering summer day, inspired by his desire to bring joy to his fellow villagers, Ravi set out on an adventure into the dense forest that bordered Gokul. His feet carried him deeper into the wilderness, guided by the whispers of the wind and the call of the unknown, a journey made magical by his unwavering curiosity.

Hidden away in the heart of the forest, he discovered a secluded glade. In its centre stood an ancient and twisted mango tree, its bark gnarled like the hands of time, unlike any he had ever seen. Underneath it, a wise old turtle named Kavi rested, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of ages, acquired through countless seasons of observation.

“What’s so special about this tree?” Ravi asked, his voice quivering with excitement, unable to contain his youthful energy.

“This, dear boy, is the Magic Mango Tree,” Kavi replied, his voice as deep and slow as the drifting clouds, filled with gravitas. “It grants but one wish, a wish that must be chosen with the greatest of care.”

A wish! Ravi’s heart began to dance like the butterflies in the village meadows. He could wish for anything in the world! But what should he choose? His mind buzzed like the bees in spring, with ideas as endless as the stars in the night sky.

Remembering the happy faces of his village, Ravi blurted out, “I want the tree to shower mangoes all over Gokul! Imagine the joy and feasting we’ll have!”

The tree quivered, and a golden mango dropped into Ravi’s hand as if answering his call. Kavi’s eyes widened, filled with a mix of wonder and concern.

“Remember, young one, think before you act,” Kavi warned, his words like a gentle caress, but they were lost in the wind as Ravi dashed back towards the village, his mind awhirl with dreams of delight.

Upon his return, Ravi’s wish began to manifest. The sky turned a glowing shade of orange, and mangoes began to fall like gentle raindrops, each one a golden kiss from nature. The villagers were thrilled at first, dancing and laughing in the streets, their faces alight with joy.

But soon, the delight turned to dismay. Mangoes were everywhere — in the houses, the streets, the fields. Crops were crushed, roads were blocked, and chaos unfolded, turning the dream into a nightmare.

Ravi watched in horror, his heart sinking like a setting sun. The joy he had hoped to bring had turned sour, like an overripe fruit.

Determined to set things right, tears in his eyes and regret weighing heavy on his soul, he ran back to the Magic Mango Tree.

“What have I done, Kavi?” he cried, his voice breaking like a fragile branch.

Kavi looked at Ravi, his eyes filled with understanding. “You have learned a harsh but valuable lesson, young one. It’s not too late to make amends. Your actions from here on will define you.”

With renewed determination, Ravi spent the next weeks working tirelessly to clear the mangoes. He rallied the villagers, and together they turned the disaster into an opportunity. They made mango preserves, fed the animals, and created fertile compost for the fields. The process was arduous and filled with challenges, but Ravi’s newfound wisdom and relentless spirit led them through.

The village was restored, but more importantly, Ravi grew as a person. He stood before the Magic Mango Tree, no longer a boy acting on impulse but a young man who had learned to think before he acted. He thanked Kavi, knowing that the wise turtle had given him a gift more precious than any magic wish — the understanding that thoughtful consideration leads to wise choices.

Back in Gokul, Ravi became a cherished community member, respected for his thoughtful actions and newfound wisdom. He would often sit under the village’s ordinary mango tree, reflecting on the lessons he had learned, knowing that he had been given a second chance to grow, learn, and become wise.

The Magic Mango Tree became a symbol of Ravi’s transformation, a reminder to all who heard his tale to think before acting, for hasty decisions can lead to unforeseen consequences. The tale of Ravi’s adventure was passed down through generations, a legacy of wisdom born from a wild garden of imagination.
