The Less Talked About Legacy of Mumbai’s 2008 Terror Attack

Mumbai terror attacks & the consequent economic downfall of Pakistan is the modern example of Aparikshitkarakam.

In a conversation with his pupil, a teacher delves into the ancient wisdom of the Panchatantra, using it to illuminate the concept of Aparikshitkarakam to his students. He skillfully connected this age-old moral to the contemporary context of the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008. Through this real-world example, he illustrated how the rash and destructive decisions of the terrorists not only brought immediate tragedy to Mumbai but also set off a chain of global repercussions for Pakistan, the country which harboured and abetted terrorists. The teacher emphasised how these actions, lacking in foresight and responsibility, led to severe economic and diplomatic consequences for Pakistan. This narrative, bridging ancient morals and modern events, highlighted the timeless relevance of the Panchatantra’s teachings.

Mumbai 2008 Terror Attacks led to the downfall of Pakistan

Acharya ji: ” Good morning. Today, we’re going to delve into a profound concept from our Indian philosophical heritage called ‘Aparikshitkarakam.’ This term, in Sanskrit, refers to the consequences of actions that are undertaken without proper forethought or consideration. It teaches us about the importance of being thoughtful in our decisions, as every action can have a wide range of effects, some of which may be unforeseen and long-lasting. To illustrate this, let’s discuss a significant event in our recent history – the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008.”

Nachiket: “Mumbai terror attacks? What exactly happened, Acharya ji?”

Acharya ji: ” On November 26, 2008, Mumbai, a city known for its vibrant life, faced a horrific terrorist attack. Ten terrorists from Pakistan covertly entered the city with the agenda to cause maximum damage to life, property, and India’s economy through a series of coordinated attacks across the city. Over three days, they targeted innocent civilians, resulting in the loss of 166 lives. This was not just a local tragedy, but a shockwave felt worldwide.”

Nachiket: “That sounds terrifying. What happened after the attacks?”

Acharya ji: “In response to this tragedy, India took decisive steps to prevent such horrors. Our government reached out globally, seeking support to combat terrorist threats. This diplomatic effort led to the United Nations taking action against groups like Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Lashkar e Taiba linked to the attacks.”

Nachiket: “Did India change its security measures?”

Acharya ji: “Absolutely. India significantly enhanced its internal security. The Navy and Coast Guard became vigilant protectors of our seas. The Indian Navy took charge of maritime security, and the Coast Guard oversaw our territorial waters. We also saw the emergence of specialised units and advanced systems like the Automatic Identification System in larger vessels. On an international level, we sought cooperation against terrorism, which led to significant actions against groups linked to the attacks.”

India's legal, diplomatic and legal measures cornered Pakistan successfully.

Nachiket: “What about the terrorists, acharya ji?”

Acharya ji: “The legal system played a crucial role. The sole apprehended terrorist, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, a Pakistani national, was brought to justice, reflecting India’s stance against terror. Internationally, India improved intelligence-sharing with agencies like the FBI and MI6, which helped counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.”

Nachiket: “And how did these events affect Pakistan?”

Acharya ji: “Pakistan’s experience is a stark example of Aparikshitkarakam. Their state policy of harbouring terrorists, abetting terror as a state policy and Pakistan’s approach to terrorism financing led to economic consequences, like being grey-listed by the Financial Action Task Force. This had a significant impact on their economy. A study from Texas A&M University highlighted a $38 billion loss to Pakistan’s GDP between 2008 and 2019. This economic downturn impacted their exports, foreign investment, and overall stability. The ordinary citizens, far removed from these decisions, faced the consequences.”

Nachiket: “It’s like the actions of a few impacted so many…”

Acharya ji: “Exactly. The terrorists, driven not by misguided motives but by a deliberate agenda to inflict harm, set off a chain of events with long-term consequences. This narrative teaches us the importance of foresight. Every action, especially those taken without careful consideration, can have wide-ranging effects.”

Nachiket: “So, the principle of Aparikshitkarakam applies to everyone?”

Acharya ji: “Yes. It reminds us that our actions, whether as individuals or nations, can extend far beyond our immediate surroundings. We must act with wisdom and responsibility, understanding that our decisions shape the future.”

Nachiket: “This story is a powerful lesson, Acharya ji. It shows how important it is to think before we act.”

Acharya ji: “Indeed, it is. Let this story be a solemn reminder of the Mumbai terror attack of 2008 to all of us about the significance of thoughtful actions and the impact they can have on the world.”
