“Where are we now?” Roshni asked, wide-eyed.
Aarav spotted a newspaper stand and read the date aloud: “December 12, 1931. Look, Roshni! It says New Delhi is being inaugurated as the capital of India today!”
Their excitement was interrupted by a commotion nearby. A group of people were gathered around a post office, chattering enthusiastically.
Curious, Aarav and Roshni approached the crowd. They overheard snippets of conversation: “New series… Six designs… Purana Qila… Government buildings…”
An elderly gentleman noticed their confused expressions and smiled kindly. “Are you here to see the new stamps, children?” he asked.
Aarav nodded, trying to hide his surprise. “Yes, sir. Could you tell us more about them?”
The gentleman’s eyes lit up. “Of course! Today, we’re witnessing history. The postal department is issuing India’s first series of pictorial stamps to commemorate New Delhi becoming the capital. It’s a set of six beautiful stamps, each showcasing a different aspect of our new capital.”
He carefully withdrew a small envelope from his pocket and showed them the stamps. Aarav and Roshni marvelled at the intricate designs.
“Look here,” the gentleman pointed out. “This one shows the majestic Purana Qila, connecting our new capital to its ancient history. And these others depict various government buildings—the Secretariat, the Council House, and other important structures.”
Roshni’s eyes widened in wonder. “They’re beautiful! But why are they so special?”
The gentleman chuckled. “You see, my dear, until now, our stamps have been rather plain—just portraits or symbols. These are the first to truly showcase our architecture and heritage. It’s not just postage; it’s art that tells the story of our capital.”
Aarav carefully examined each stamp, taking in the detailed engravings of the buildings. “It’s like a miniature tour of New Delhi,” he mused.
“Exactly!” the gentleman beamed. “These stamps will travel all over India and beyond, showing the world the grandeur of our new capital. It’s a proud moment for all of us.”
As Aarav returned the stamps, he felt the Scinde Dawk in his pocket grow warm again. He quickly thanked the gentleman and pulled Roshni aside.
“We’re about to jump again,” he whispered. Roshni nodded, gripping his hand tightly as the world began to blur around them.
